Book Review: Nothing’s Sweeter Than Candy by Lotchie Burton

nstcCandace Brown grew up believing in fairy tales that promised her a Prince Charming, a knight in shining armor, and a happily-ever-after ending. But at twenty-seven, with two failed relationships and a heart broken into pieces, the facts of life have opened her eyes to the truth: not everyone gets a happy ending—sometimes, all you get is “the end.”

Brice Coleman has never been in love, and he’s never been anyone’s knight in shining anything. Since entering the battle between the sexes at puberty, he has long enjoyed the spoils of war, one female conquest at a time. And then, a chance encounter engineered by fate changes his life in the blink of an eye, and brings him face to face with his destiny. A beautiful, emotionally fragile woman steals his heart.

With every intention to become a permanent fixture in Candace’s life, Brice is determined to protect the woman he loves—and heal her broken heart.

How many times can you risk a broken heart before you stop  risking love altogether?

Scarred from not one, but two broken hearts, Candace has given up on the possibility of finding Mr. Right, believing his existence stems from far fetched fairy tales.  She’s content to stick to no strings attached relationships, even if it means being treated like dirt – it’s what she’s used to and worse still, she believes she is every bit the ‘Freak’ she’s been labelled by her most recent hookup.

Brice is a man with a plan, living life as a bachelor, enjoying the company of women who don’t expect anything more. When his friend and self-labelled bachelor extraordinaire settles down with a woman, Brice can’t work out why…until he meets a woman that causes those same feelings.

From the moment Brice breathes in the same air as Candace, he’s hooked. She pushes his boundaries and buttons in a way he’s never experienced before and for the first time in his life – he falls in love. But what Candace wants ‘friends with benefits’ couldn’t be further away from what Brice finds himself yearning for.

With interesting characters, hot sex and an element of danger I found Sweeter than Candy a great read. I was sucked in from the first chapter and read the whole book over two days – I couldn’t put it down. Admittedly, I found the beginning a little slow to get going, however I only realized this after the fact, so the early chapters were engaging enough to keep me interested.

Candace is a great leading female, representing the emotionally unavailable of the coupling. Her backbone is to be admired and she stays true to herself – no whimsical changing of one’s mind, which I find often happens in romance books. Likeable, relatable, intelligent, and confident her character is well rounded. Her views on love are completely understandable and highly realistic.

Brice is sweet, protective and knocked for six by the emotions Candace brings out in him. His once love of the single life is replaced by his love of one woman. His character is at times, a little cliché, but his inner thoughts carried me through this well enough to hold my interest. He knows what he wants and he’s determined to get it. He’s sexy, smart and certainly likeable.

The author created two dynamic characters that will keep the readers on their toes. All in all, Sweeter than Candy is a lighthearted and very steamy read that I enjoyed very much.

Book Review: Step Brother Dearest by Penelope Ward

stepYou’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. But things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Then, just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Stepbrother Dearest is a standalone novel.

**Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+

Oh my gawd, ladies. Pass me the fan and run me a cold shower, this book is hawt. The story begins as Greta and her mother prepare their house for their new arrival, Greta’s never-met-before stepbrother – Elec. From the moment Elec walks through the door, Greta can’t keep her temperature down, he is smoking. Unfortunately, he’s also a rated A pain in the ass.

Elec has a serious chip on his shoulder and finds it all kinds of fun to tease, ridicule and embarrass Greta. Not exactly happy about having to spend the year with his father’s new family, Elec just wants to stay away from everyone until the time comes when he can be on his way.

Greta finds Elec rude, ignorant, cocky and sexy as hell. As his games begin to wear thin on her nerves, her retaliation – well, lets just say, it doesn’t go to plan.

And so begins the equally measuring heartwarming and heartbreaking journey of Greta and Elec as they begin to bond, ultimately overstepping boundries and breaking each other’s hearts.

Stepbrother dearest is a tale of forbidden love, loss and a relationship doomed before it even began.

This book is nearly everything I want in story. The emotional journey I experienced while reading was tumultuous to say the least. Laugh, cry, scream at the pages – I did it all. Greta had me eating out of her hand from page one. She’s sweet, loyal and tough as nails when she needs to be. Elec – ladies, you will love him. He’s had a tough time of it and his attitude becomes very understandable.

I want to rate this five stars, I really, really do – however, there is a part of the book that is overly repetitive and honestly, it could have been condensed. This segment turned the book into something I was thoroughly enjoying, into something I became a little irritated with. That being said, it is still a wonderful book and more than worth the read.

A not quite there 4/5

Book Review: A Single Step by Georgia Rose

GeorgiaRose‘The gun continued to be levelled at me. “Answer it…but don’t tell him I’m here or he’ll get to listen to you die.” That concentrated my mind considerably, and as I reached for my phone I came up with a plan…’

Emma Grayson was left devastated when her life was torn apart by tragedy and betrayal. Now someone believes it’s time for her to start again and puts an advert for a job through her door which leads her to the Melton Estate. Emma Grayson has suffered far more than any woman should have to and I immediately liked and sympathized with the character. In actual fact, the author does such a good job of forging a connection with the character and the reader that I found myself in emotional turmoil at times. Emma is sweet woman, however due to her past, she is untrusting – and understandably so. Therefore, at times she comes across a bit short.

To get to the crux of it, Emma takes a job at a beautiful and remote estate. There she settles in well with the other employees. The love interest – Trent, first comes across as a bit of a rude, control freak. However, as we begin to gain more knowledge about him, we also gain a better understanding into why he behaves in the way he does. As the story progresses, Trent and Emma must trust each other and soon the chemistry settles in. I really can’t say much more here to avoid spoilers.

I prefer a fast to moderately paced read and I found this book to be a little slow in places. However, at times I felt the relaxed movement necessary to give the reader time to deal with the myriad of emotions some parts evoke. Some of the hints that were dropped glared at me, others were well executed. As a genre, I think this belongs in Women’s Fiction, regardless of the suspense and romance aspects of it. All round, a great read in a genre I wouldn’t necessarily pick up.

4/5

Book Review: Tales from Null City by Barb Taub

tales_from_null_city-barb_taub-1563x2500-3In the world of Null City… Superpowers suck. If you just want to live a normal life, Null City is only a Metro ride away. After one day there, imps become baristas, and hellhounds become poodles. Demons settle down, become parents, join the PTA, and worry about their taxes. But outside of Null City, now that the century-long secret Nonwars between Gifts and Haven are over and the Accords Treaty is signed, an uneasy peace is policed by Wardens under the command of the Accords Agency.

Just for the Spell of It

Liam is an ungodly soccer-playing card sharp on a mission from God. Eirie is a beautiful punk fairy princess with her own daytime radio talk show. They’ve worked cases for the Accords Agency before, but with war between realms looming and her baby sister as the bargaining chip, partnering just got personal.

Payback is a Witch

Claire Danielsen is a young witch whose goddess is house cat of unusual size. Peter Oshiro is a Warden policing a delicate truce between those who are human and those who… aren’t.

It just would have been nice if someone told them the angels were all on the other side.

Tales of Null City contains two short stories – Payback is a Witch and Just for the Spell of it.

Payback is a Witch

I was immediately thrust into Claire’s world. A a witch and the last member of her family, the weight of responsibility lies heavy on her shoulders. She is a top Warden for the Accords agency, and as such, she needs to be closely guarded. The director of the Accrods Agency assigns someone to watch over her and that someone turns out to be former flame, Peter.

The romantic sparks fly as Peter attempts to rekindle their romance, however, while Claire certainly loves Peter, she wishes to keep him from harms way.

Although this story was a short, it felt like a lot if information was compressed into it. At times, this slowed the pace down with expository backstory. However, the author does enough to maintain interest throughout. The characters are engaging, I particularly liked Bygul – the cat, and I enjoyed every aspect. A good read and a cleverly built world to enjoy, along with the characters in it.

Just for the Spell of it.

Of the two stories, this was my preference.

I adored the characters – punky Eirie and sexy Liam, the interaction between the two was so well executed. The relationship between them is fun, flirty and charming. I really have nothing negative to say about this story.

Full of mystery and suspense, charm and sass – I really enjoyed it.

A firm 4/5

Book Review: Fractured Immortal by E.L. Wicker

elwickerAfter a terrifying vampire attack in 1810, Ilia Rose spent the next two centuries hunting Sol, the man responsible for turning her and her friends into vampires.

When Ilia discovers he’s run to the one place she’s running from, she’s forced to face her most painful memories back in her hometown, Bearwood.

But Nathaniel is keeping secrets and as they begin to unravel, instead of running away from him, Ilia finds herself falling for him. When his last secret is revealed Ilia’s past comes together in a way she never imagined and she’s left with only one option: trust Nathaniel to help her kill Sol, or risk relinquishing her new found strength thus causing catastrophic and devastating consequences for her and everyone she loves.

A vampire tale like none other, love, pain, devastation and revenge, all weave together to create the first in a dark and unmissable new adult series.

With her debut novel, Fractured Immortal, E.L. Wicker makes her mark in paranormal romance as an author to watch.  A story that transverses so many emotions, one cannot help but turn page by page until the very end. With a number of vampires, witches and shifters, I found the authors ability to add depth and allow the reader to form a strong connection with each one, truly amazing.  She has a knack for writing clear and vivid descriptions, as well as, some tough action scenes.  Add that with a complicated romance and you get a well thought and nicely paced story that leaves you on the edge of your seat when it ends in a cliffhanger.

If you Like paranormal romance, The Bearwood Series is definitely one to read.

Book Review: Hating Christmas by Carol Rose

hatingchristmas

Documentary filmmaker Holly hates Christmas, but she must spend it with her much-loved mother and the man her mom married after she hadn’t seen him for forty years. To make matters worse, big time Hollywood agent Levi Harper is her new step-father’s son and Holly has just gone around Levi to get his client to sign a contract to do her new documentary.Levi’s furious because his actor is up for a big budget film due to film at the same time as Holly’s piddly documentary. If only red-headed Holly weren’t so frustrating–and so hot–he could have reasoned with her, but she’s sexy and entangling. While she and Levi both hate Christmas and both think their parents should break-up, they’re both drawn to one another and together they discover that Christmas can be both satisfying and magical.

Not everyone loves the Christmas season. Holly never recovered from losing her father during the holiday’s. She hates everything about Christmas. Even more so when she has to spend it with her mother, new stepfather and his son.Without giving away any spoilers and despite knowing that it was added for a bit of humor and to set up the rivalry between the two main characters, I found the beginning and the meeting of the step siblings just a little too coincidental. I also felt the idea of two grown adults conspiring to break up their parents was a little far fetched and there were some proofreading errors that threw you for a moment, but nothing too jarring that took away from the story. With that being said, the interactions between Holly and Levi was completely believable and on par. Their romance makes the story. They are both fun, witty and likable and the attraction between them sizzles. I was thoroughly impressed with the steamy scenes and the author’s attention to detail in her descriptions of all the Christmas decorations. A fun, sensual read that leaves you warm in the end.

Mistletoe and Mischief is a cute novella with a twist in the holiday theme.  Christmas in July at the local Zoo brings divorcee’s, Eric and Marissa, together when they both chaperone their daughters field trip.  This is a sweet romantic story with depth to each of the characters despite it’s length.  The interactions with the kids is adorable and adds to the element of sweetness.  Unfortunately, it seemed that just when the story begins to evolve and draw you in, it gets wrapped up with an epilogue into the future.
