Book Review: Broken Chords by Carrie Elks

brokenLara knows she should feel lucky. Married to the man of her dreams, with a gorgeous new baby, she should be enjoying her happy-ever-after. But she never expected motherhood to be so difficult, or for her life to change so dramatically.

Alex has it all: hot, tattooed looks, a beautiful wife, and a band that’s finally getting noticed. A lucrative offer of a US tour should be the icing on the cake. But as he leaves the country, distance isn’t the only thing that starts to pull their relationship apart.

With half a world dividing them, Alex and Lara have to battle for a marriage they once took for granted.

For Lara and Alex Cartwright, life seemed perfect. With a good marriage and new baby, they thought they had it all, but neither were prepared for the strain of how being new parents might affect their relationship or the internal struggles each would entail with realizing that having a child does change things.

Amazing! This story spoke to me on so many levels, I find it hard to wrap it all up neatly in a little review. Realistic, heartfelt, relatable, I could go on and on about all the strong qualities that make this a five star read. The author leaves nothing out. She touches every aspect of marriage and parenting and how in the beginning they don’t always mesh the way we’d expect them to. But, please don’t let the idea of this being about marriage and babies fool you into thinking it’s a chick-lit driven storyline. Despite being polar opposites, the chemistry between Lara and Alex is smoking hot. Their relationship is both, physically and emotionally intense. At times it became so tumultuous, my gut wrenched and my chest ached. I sympathized with each of them and felt their joy, angst and pain. And the details! Oh my!! The author has a way of bringing details into the story that make you fully grasp everything around you. From a car horn honking, and the breeze blowing through the air, to baby Max’s drool sliding off his chin, you feel as if you are there experiencing everything around you.

I would like to note the explicit language throughout the book. In my opinion, it’s fitting for the characters personalities and not added just for theatrics of the story. If you find that offending, this might not be the book for you, however if you’re looking for an emotionally driven read that leaves you wanting more, this is definitely one you won’t want to miss.

Beautifully written, intense, and emotional, I loved every minute of it.

Book Review: Inside The Lines by Ally Bishop

insideWhat happens in love might destroy you…

Or remake you altogether.

I make a living offering men and women their ultimate fantasies…as submissives of the mysterious Mistress Hathaway.

I’ve never surrendered to anyone. That’s not the way it works. Or rather, not the way I operate.

But when the gorgeous Fin MacKenzie shows up in my life, he throws everything out of balance.

Now I’m not sure who I am anymore, and I’m questioning everything.

What woman can turn away from a gorgeous Scotsman, especially when he sets her body on fire and her heart ablaze?

I have to stop it…us. I can’t keep going like this. It will ruin everything I’ve worked so hard to build.

Who am I if I surrender to him? Worse yet, who am I if I don’t?

A copy of Inside The Lines was provided to ESRR in exchange for an honest review.

Lux Trace has an interesting job – she’s a professional dominatrix, specializing in helping people to live out their fantasies. Lux (AKA Mistress Hathaway) has three simple rules that she adheres to:

   Never let them disobey you.

Never let them touch you.

 Never have sex with them.

She knows what she wants and she’s in control at all times. Or at least she was until she came face to face with Fin Mackenize aka sex on a stick (okay, I made up the aka – but yeah!)

As Lux begins to break the rules that keep her grounded, she finds herself plunging into a pit of confusion and wanting to fall into Fin’s arms, but scared about what that could mean for her heart.

Lux keeps men at arms length. She’s had a troubling existence due to a less than happy childhood. When Fin walks into her life, her heart falls fast, but her head has other ideas. Inside the lines is a journey of learning how to love when you never thought you could.

I really loved Lux – a great, headstrong character with issues that she strives to overcome – even though it is challenging at times.

Fin – ahh, lovely. He’s sweet, sexy and comes out with some awesome one liners:

“Well, he wasna very specific with the details, but he did mention that ya needed a cock.”

That line had me howling with laughter, though I did find Fin’s accent threw me a little at times and I would’ve preferred if the author had just mentioned his strong accent rather than adding it to the dialogue.

There are, of course, some truly heartbreaking moments, moments when I wanted to shake Lux by the shoulders. Poor Fin!

“Ye broke me, Lux Trace. And it hurt.”

A teary eyed moment for sure.

There are some super steamy scenes, but all done tastefully and what I liked most about this book is that there is a fabulous plot.

I fail to find anything I dislike about this book. From the very start, it sucked me in and I didn’t want to put it down.

Book Review: A SEAL’s Secret by Tawny Weber (Uniformly Hot!)

blazeSubject: Lt. Commander Mitch “Irish” Donovan

His Mission: Babysit a fitness queen with a hands-on approach!

Navy SEAL Mitch Donovan always plays to win. The push-up contest at the Halloween party should have been a piece of cake. Except that the cake in question is a hot woman dressed as a delicious dessert. Now the only exercise on Mitch’s mind is restraint…

Livi Kane may be The Body Babe, but she has zero confidence. This hunky SEAL, however, makes her forget everything—except for a workout involving his hot, naked bod and a whole lot of sexy, sweaty delight. But Mitch has his secrets—and Livi certainly has hers. All it will take is one unexpected encounter to turn this steamy attraction into an even bigger secret that will start showing any day now…

Hot! Oh my … shew this one was HOT! Sinfully Hot.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than by dressing up as a Twinkie and then going head to head in a push-up contest with a sexy SEAL? It wasn’t exactly how super shy Olivia Kane, aka The Body Babe, planned to spend her evening, but on a bet placed by her BFF, she had to give it a go. And since she’s known for being in top physical condition, she wasn’t all that worried that she might lose- except Lt. Commander Mitch Donovan appeared to be in excellent condition himself. A tie means they both win and when they pay up with a kiss and then a date, they realize there is a lot more between them than flexing their muscles.

Fav Quote:

“You don’t come near me if you’re doing that. You wanna have sex, I’m your man. You want to fight and argue, I’ll step right up. You need to get advice, to talk, to have someone killed, I can arrange that. But you cannot and will not cry on me.”

There was so much about this story I absolutely loved. The steamy scenes-and there were plenty of them-sizzled. Physically, Livi and Mitch ignited together. They flirted, had sex, laughed, had sex, ate, had sex, flirted some more, and well you see where this is going. Both characters were fun and enlightening despite the fact I had a hard time connecting with Livi’s character in the beginning. She’s supposed to be shy and out of her element, but I didn’t grasp this part of her personality and felt she was more of a go-getter than they story tried to portray. Overall, I liked her. I liked Mitch and I especially liked them together. But there is more to these two than sex. Both faced with decisions for the future, you see Livi and Mitch grow as they decide what’s important to them.

I’ve read several of Tawney Weber’s SEAL series and they never disappoint. They’re fun, fast-past reads with sexually charged characters that always leave you thinking- WOW!

Book Review: Leath’s Legacy by Anne Ashby

leathAfter years of financial struggle Leath Robson and her brother are ecstatic when they’re willed a property in northern New Zealand. It gives them some much needed/highly sought after security. But who was this old lady who’d left them so much? Leath struggles with guilt when discovering their benefactor had spent her last years in a nursing home.

Kirk Buchanan had left the family farm years ago to make his fortune. Summoned home he’s devastated to find his father suffering from Alzheimers. Hearing his dad likes to visit his childhood home, Kirk resolves to buy the place to ensure his safety. It’s not much but he has to do something.

Unfortunately the property has new owners who keep refusing his generous offers. He must have his father’s birthplace. Obviously a more personal approach is called for.

I love stories that take me to a place I’ve never been and allow me to feel as if I was there. Leath’s Legacy easily achieves this feat. Set in the countryside of New Zealand, Anne Ashby does an incredible job of drawing you into the story and allowing you to visually picture each scene as it unfolds. Whether it’s the shoreline of the beach, a walk through the bush or the meanderings around the property, you get a feel for the lay of the land without ever realizing she’s taken the time to describe it.

While the trope of inheriting from an unknown benefactor isn’t new, Leath’s Legacy puts a new spin on it with the mystery of finding out the relationship to the benefactor. It’s a mystery that keeps you turning the pages, one after another, hoping to figure out the connection. Leath and Kirk’s characters were both solid, well intended and genuinely good. It takes a bit to get into the romance aspects of the story, as the beginning is mostly about the renovations of the property, but I didn’t mind that part and enjoyed seeing Leath and her brother’s ideas come to life. I felt the romance was on par and believable in every day life and liked the added touch of Kirk dealing with his father’s disease.

Although there are no explicit sex scenes, Leath’s Leagacy does contain a fair amount of sexual tension between the two main characters. At times this can be quite spicy, but in my opinion it still remains true to a clean romance.

Book Review: Running Interference by Elley Arden

runningAs an offensive linewoman for the Cleveland Clash, Tanya Martin is tough inside and out. The 5’9” beauty can take a hit and keep on going. But running into Tanya stirs up plenty of old feelings he never resolved. He was happy to leave his old life behind him when he hit the NFL, but walking away from their friendship was a mistake he wants to rectify.

As they work together to help save her dad’s gym, Cam and Tanya’s easy camaraderie and undeniable chemistry resurface. But can she open up enough to trust him with her heart a second time around?

There’s something about first. First crush, first kiss, first love, first … ahem-you know. Tanya Martin and Cam Simmons shared a few of those. In fact, being close friends, they shared a lot, until Cam got drafted into the NFL and quit calling or coming around. But, five years later, he returns to his old neighborhood and immediately runs into Tanya. And with one look at each other, all those past feelings spark up again.I’m a sucker for second chance romances and Running Interference did not disappoint. This is my first Elley Arden read and I can guarantee it won’t be my last. She has a unique writing style. Simple, yet strong with fluid and easy dialogue, you can’t help but dive in and not come up until you’re finished. I loved the way she brought the glamour of being a pro-athlete down to a normal perspective. Any woman would fall in love with Cam. Rich, smooth and super sexy, he’s a total package, but in a down-to-earth way. His and Tanya’s rapport makes the closeness of their past friendship fully understandable. Also making you realize Tanya’s apprehension for any feelings she might have. Tanya herself is a unique character and another aspect of the story I enjoyed. Also an athlete, she’s a mentally and physically strong woman who has her act together. She’s not the needy or fickle type who’s in search of someone to make her life complete. She has what she needs- family, friends, a good job and sports. Or at least that’s what she believes until Cam enters her life again.Flirty, fun, and emotionally driven, Running Interference is the first installment of a new series, The Cleveland Clash. It’s not only a story of a second chance at love, but a tale of family, friendships and finding out where you belong.

Kristie Cook Interview with Red Coat PR

Are you a fan of angels and demons? Discovering new worlds and how they interact with our own? Do you like to ask the “what-if” questions?  Check out the amazing, Kristie Cook and her Soul Savers series, now a completed series with the release of Faith.
RCPR: I have to say I am extremely excited about the release of Faith, your final book in the Soul Savers Series. Are you sad to see it ending? Do you have any plans for a spin off?
KRISTIEOh, gosh, it is so bittersweet to see it ending. With seven books plus a novella and a collection of short stories, it’s been a huge part of my life. Saying goodbye to the characters is like saying goodbye to family. But it’s also been rewarding and quite an accomplishment, especially when I started, I wasn’t entirely confident I’d finish one book, let alone a whole series. As far as plans for what’s next…my lips are sealed. For now.
RCPR: You have so many great characters in this series. If you could either be a character in your book or have a power that one of your characters have who or what would you choose?
KRISTIE: Alexis can read minds, and I think a lot of people would love that power, but I don’t think I would. I already have too many characters in my head. I wouldn’t want the rest of the world in there, too! Not to mention how disturbing most people’s thoughts would be. *shudders* But I do think her power of levitation/telekinesis would be awesome.
RCPR: I know some authors know their story from beginning to end before they write it. Did the Soul Savers Series end how you thought it would or did it throw you for a loop and go completely off the track?
KRISTIE: I had a general image of the final battle scene in my mind and the big turning point for Alexis since I finished the first book, but not everything play by play. So much of the storyline evolved over time – I was thrown for a loop many times, but every surprise led me beautifully back to where I intended to go. That’s what I love about writing
RCPR: Do you listen to music while you write; and if so what kind or do you need to write in complete silence?
KRISTIE: I have to actually write in silence, with white noise, like a fan. Lyrics distract me. But I do listen to music that is right for the story when I’m doing other work, exercising, cooking, etc.
RCPR: You’ve taken a different approach to writing characters like Vampires and Shifters along with Angels and Demons. What inspired you to write this series so creatively and pushed you to create a world like you did?
KRISTIE: I’d had the idea of writing angels and demons tumbling in my mind for years before I decided to start writing fiction again. When I finally decided to play, I sketched out some angel and demon-type characters. Around the same time, I was scanning through reader and book forums one day and came across a thread of young girls crying because they wanted the Twilight characters to be real. And I thought, “Well, then the bad guys would kill the author for exposing their secrets.” Immediately, the “what if” question popped into my head—“What if the supernatural creatures a big-name author wrote about showed up in her home, threatening to kill her if she didn’t stop exposing their secrets?” Then I realized this author and my character for the angels and demons idea were one and the same. The mythology snowballed from there.
RCPR: What book or series do you have in the works for us next?
KRISTIE: Top-secret…for a little bit longer. I have a lot of stories I want to discover about secondary characters in the Soul Savers world, but I also have other things in the works. Announcements will be coming after Faith releases.
RCPR: What has been your craziest fan interaction so far?
KRISTIE: Tattoos! Several fans have tattoos from my books! I do, too, but you know, I’m the author. I just never thought… The craziest is a tattoo of my skull-and-wings logo, including my initials – breaking her own rule of never tattooing someone else’s initials on her body. Haha! My fans are unbelievably awesome. I’m always blown away and humbled by how many people love my characters as much as I do.
RCPR: Is there a snack or drink or drink that you must have for while you are writing?
KRISTIE: Chocolate. And when under deadline, coffee.
RCPR: Are there any authors that you go Fan Girl over?
KRISTIE: So many I fan girl over even though they are friends now! But the ones I’d completely freak out and probably lose all brainpower with would be J.K. Rowling and Stephen King. I know, not very original, but there’s a reason people love them.
RCPR: What are some events that you have coming up for 2015?
KRISTIE: I’m doing a UK Tour in April, utopYA (Nashville) in June, PennedCon (St. Louis) in July, and InD’Scribe (Palm Springs) in September. That’s what I have planned so far for this year.

Book Review: Not Looking for Love by Lena Bourne

nlfl***This is the first installment of a 5-part steamy New Adult romance, Not Looking For Love, serial. The FINAL episode is available now–>***

Sometimes, what you want is not really what you need.

Gail is only twenty-two years old and her mom is dying. Not just dying, she will be dead in a few days, if the doctors are to be trusted, and Gail is certain she herself won’t survive that. After a run in with Scott, the hot gardener from next door, Gail begins to see him as the perfect distraction from her unbearable life. It’s not love Gail wants. She just wants to feel good with someone who makes her forget, if only for a little while, and Scott fits that description perfectly.

Scott just got back into town and he’s still trying to get his life back together. He already has more problems and regrets than he can ever hope to live with, and the last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who is clearly a little unsettled, if not downright insane. But the fact that Gail is very attractive and keeps throwing herself at him makes it impossible to keep sending her away. Which he should, for Gail’s sake more than his own.

Warning: This book is intended for people 18 years and older, since it contains hot, explicit sex between consenting adults, and all the bad words associated with it.

This book left me with a lot of questions – which it should as it’s episodic and delivered to the reader every few weeks in short, manageable bites.

Gail’s world is crumbling around her. Her mother has only days or weeks to live and is wasting away, unable to get out of bed. Gail’s emotional turmoil is very apparent and there were times when I really felt for her.

Scott seems sweet and caring, though at this stage I don’t really know what to make of him. Throughout the book it becomes apparent that he has secrets – what these are remains to be seen and I’m sure all will be revealed as the series progresses.

The author does a great job taking us on a rollercoaster ride of emotion as Gail struggles to deal with the imminent loss of her mother. The overall feeling throughout the book is dark and hopeless which, considering Gail’s circumstances, it should be. However, as much as I wanted to like Gail – I couldn’t. This is problematic, because as much as I sympathize with what she’s going through, the way she behaves toward Scott really irked me and I found myself really disliking her. She’s rude, out of line and her behavior crosses the border of over the top. Also, I feel that although emotion throughout is high, there were areas where this dipped. The romantic encounters, for example, could’ve had more tension in them. That being said, the chemistry between Scott and Gail, certainly at the start, hit the nail on the head and I feel the series could go on to become great, especially if Gail’s behavior toward Scott settles down.

Carly Piper met her nemesis, Michael Welch while on a reality style bake-off TV show. One in which Piper was happy to be voted off just to get away from Michael, who eventually went on to win. They are thrown back together when they both show up to interview for a celebrity wedding and get the gig on the pretense that they are a couple. The Confection Connection is a cute, sweet read with no big surprises or over the top dramatics. It flows easily, leaving you feeling warm and cozy throughout. The characters are well developed, believable and the attraction between the two is intense and yet modest. Always the professional, Piper comes across icy in the beginning, but Michael’s fun and charismatic banter warms her up and keeps the tension between the two light.
Overall, a satisfying read- 4 Stars
