I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review/

Double Click is the second installment of the Click Trilogy and takes right up where Click leaves off. Written in the same format, as a series of emails shared between friends, I found Double Click much easier to follow along even though I continued to skip over each email heading which names the subject and addressee.

Like Click, Double Click is filled with the same witty correspondence and sometimes friendly, sometimes catty dialogue that Becker has a knack for writing. The friendships make this story. They are fun, light, but also touch on some heartfelt issues that bring a serious note to the storyline.

For me, I felt Click was mostly about Renee and her journey of finding love and I truly felt Double Click should have been Shelly’s story. I would have loved to have seen things mixed up a bit and the majority of the correspondence come from Shelly to the other’s. She’s by far been my favorite character and I think she had so much more to add this time than Renee did. As for Ashley, she grew on me a bit. I didn’t care much for her personality in the beginning, but we see her grow as a person and I really like that. Once again, I felt like Mark was on the sidelines. I really like him and always want him to play more of a role, but his interactions come across vague and standoffish. I have not yet read the blurb for Right Click, but I’m hoping we get more of Mark there. As for the newcomer to the group, I’m on the fence with Cassidy. I neither like nor dislike her and I’m curious to know what she might had to the next part of the story.

Overall, I didn’t get that same carefree feeling that I got from reading Click, but this story does not disappoint. Running along the lines of more chick-lit than romance, Double Click is an easy read that doesn’t take you through a gamut of emotions. Light and comical, it’s one that you’ll breeze right through. 3/5

Weddings…the perfect place to forget who you are and be who you want to be. At least that’s how Veronica Bass sees it. She has a job that not everyone deems exciting,  a life that’s comfortable enough and an overbearing mother that wants her to find Mr. Right and settle down—which Veronica intends to do. First, Veronica will become Vero. One last hurrah before she settles down to be who she’s expected to be. One night of passion. One evening where she can forget who she is and be Vero—sultry sex bomb.

Diego is tired of the same old. Same old reaction from the people he meets. Same old relationships with women. Same old crazy lifestyle. It’s time to settle down and find the one. And the one he finds is Vero. One night with Vero just isn’t enough, Diego needs more, so when they bump into each other again, Diego is determined not to let her go. Problem is, Vero isn’t the super interesting woman she claims to be, she’s Veronica—accountant, ordinary, plain.

Thinking Diego is only after a quick fling, Veronica spins lie after lie to appear more interesting. As Diego’s intentions become clearer, Veronica has one heck of a mess to clear up.

The opening chapter of this book really sucked me in. Veronica was very easy to connect with. She’s a bit of a klutz and not quite sure what she’s doing. Diego made me drool, he’s smokin’ hot! The initial meet of these two I really enjoyed, and each time Vero came up with another lie I squirmed!

Vero, for all her little lies, is still a loveable character. She’s just feeling trapped by her mother’s expectations. Diego is a bit cheesy—I prefer my male characters to be a little more alpha, however he’s so darn sweet and oh so sexy.

The chemistry between the pair is so far beyond electric that if you touch it, you’ll burst into a ball of fire. However, as I continued to read I began to feel like I was being smothered. The constant touching, eyeballing, inward squirming and suggestive dialogue became a little much and slightly repetitive. That said, the story was still fabulous and very enjoyable. A delightful little read with a satisfying end. 4/5

Book Review: Words That Bind by Ash Krafton

wtbSocial worker Tam Kerish can’t keep her cool professionalism when steamy client Mr. Burns kindles a desire for more than a client-therapist relationship—so she drops him. However, they discover she’s the talisman to which Burns, an immortal djinn, has been bound since the days of King Solomon…and that makes it difficult.

Ethical guidelines are unequivocal when it comes to personal relationships with clients. However, the djinn has a thawing effect on the usually non-emotive Tam, who begins to feel true emotion whenever he is near. Tam has to make a difficult choice: to stay on the outside, forever looking in…or to turn her back on her entire world, just for the chance to finally experience what it means to fall in love.

Tam (Tamarence) Kerish doesn’t feel, not emotionally anyway. A job as a social worker seems a perfect fit for someone that can’t experience emotion, but when new patient, Mr. Burns walks in with some odd demands, everything is about to change.

Burns is a fire elemental. His natural form is fire, but more than that, he’s a Djinn – a genie. Bound to a talisman, Burns wants nothing more than to be free of the bind that possesses him.

Ever since she was a child, Tam felt detached from the other humans around her. Where they felt, she merely saw. Her emotional detachment worried her parents who sought counselling, however Tam’s ability to see things the way others can’t, meant that finding a suitable counsellor was almost impossible. While the other adults find Tam’s behavior odd, her Grandmother seemed to know something they didn’t. Tam has, over the years, become used to her abnormality, however she is still desperate to know what it feels like to love and be loved.

When Burns turns up at Tam’s office, she belives he will be no different from the other clients that pass through her office. Little does she know that Mr. Burns is looking for something—and he knows she has it. Using the client confidentiality terms that Tam is bound by, Burns finds the perfect way to reveal everything to Tam without the risk of her exposing him.

A magical ride begins, but for Tam, it’s more than that. Finally faced with feeling real emotions, she becomes attracted to Burns. However she is conflicted by her professional role in which she can’t have personal relationships with her clients. Coupled with that, Burns behavior seems to change from one moment to the next – light and funny one minute, cold or angry the next. Still, she can’t fight her attraction.

Reading this book was an experience for me – I had never read a book about genies before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. I found myself absorbed in the details about Burns and I thought the elementals were an excellent touch.

The book was quick to get going, which I appreciated. I found Burns intriguing, funny and thoughtful. It took a little while to connect with Tam, I think this was due to her trouble feeling emotion, but I would’ve liked to really feel more from her earlier on. I accept this would be quite difficult to do though.

The ride that I embarked on reading this book was full of magic and surprise and I found it quite enjoyable. I really liked how both Tam and Burns developed as the story went on and I found their relationship believable. There are some steamy scenes, executed well by the author and they fit in well, rather than just being there for no reason. The story developed at a good pace and had a great ending. The emotional development of Tam was really well thought out and well done.

Overall, I really did enjoy this book, but I felt that the writing style was a little formal at times. A really unique book, with an interesting storyline and interesting characters. 4/5

Book Review: Her Gaze by Angel A

her gazeAt that moment, Gabe knew he had fallen for her. The first time he laid eyes on Sofy he knew that she was for him and he was hers. However, she was already taken by a dangerous man. A man that would kill before letting her go. But Gabe was willing to put his life in harm’s way to be with the woman he was in love with.

This suspenseful and sexy short story is full of excitement. It gives joy to the imagination and makes the heart beat a little faster.

An ARC copy received in exchange for an honest review.

This short novella transpires over just a couple of days and is the story of a cab driver and a woman whom he picks up on a call. Immediately there is an intense physical and emotional attraction between the two, but there’s also a nagging grandmother tagging along that keeps getting in the way of any serious conversation. After dropping the woman off, the driver realizes he literally let the woman of his dreams get away.

Although an interesting premise, this story just didn’t quite do it for me. For the first half of the story, I wasn’t sure if the cab driver was a man or a woman and we don’t learn their names, Gabe and Sofy, until nearly the end. It’s told completely from Gabe’s POV, which lets us understand him a little better, but his actions are at times creepy and stalkerish and at others, passive and wishy-washy. I don’t think hero’s have to be all alpha all the time, but sitting back and watching the woman you think you might love get beat and not do anything about it, was a downer for me. I would have liked for Gabe to have had a bit more backbone. It was also hard to make a connection with or grasp how Sofy felt, since we don’t get many of her thoughts.

Good writing and interesting plot with a lot of potential, it just didn’t come through for me. 2/5

Book Review: Broken Chords by Carrie Elks

brokenLara knows she should feel lucky. Married to the man of her dreams, with a gorgeous new baby, she should be enjoying her happy-ever-after. But she never expected motherhood to be so difficult, or for her life to change so dramatically.

Alex has it all: hot, tattooed looks, a beautiful wife, and a band that’s finally getting noticed. A lucrative offer of a US tour should be the icing on the cake. But as he leaves the country, distance isn’t the only thing that starts to pull their relationship apart.

With half a world dividing them, Alex and Lara have to battle for a marriage they once took for granted.

For Lara and Alex Cartwright, life seemed perfect. With a good marriage and new baby, they thought they had it all, but neither were prepared for the strain of how being new parents might affect their relationship or the internal struggles each would entail with realizing that having a child does change things.

Amazing! This story spoke to me on so many levels, I find it hard to wrap it all up neatly in a little review. Realistic, heartfelt, relatable, I could go on and on about all the strong qualities that make this a five star read. The author leaves nothing out. She touches every aspect of marriage and parenting and how in the beginning they don’t always mesh the way we’d expect them to. But, please don’t let the idea of this being about marriage and babies fool you into thinking it’s a chick-lit driven storyline. Despite being polar opposites, the chemistry between Lara and Alex is smoking hot. Their relationship is both, physically and emotionally intense. At times it became so tumultuous, my gut wrenched and my chest ached. I sympathized with each of them and felt their joy, angst and pain. And the details! Oh my!! The author has a way of bringing details into the story that make you fully grasp everything around you. From a car horn honking, and the breeze blowing through the air, to baby Max’s drool sliding off his chin, you feel as if you are there experiencing everything around you.

I would like to note the explicit language throughout the book. In my opinion, it’s fitting for the characters personalities and not added just for theatrics of the story. If you find that offending, this might not be the book for you, however if you’re looking for an emotionally driven read that leaves you wanting more, this is definitely one you won’t want to miss.

Beautifully written, intense, and emotional, I loved every minute of it.

A copy of Inside The Lines was provided to ESRR in exchange for an honest review.

Lux Trace has an interesting job – she’s a professional dominatrix, specializing in helping people to live out their fantasies. Lux (AKA Mistress Hathaway) has three simple rules that she adheres to:

   Never let them disobey you.

Never let them touch you.

 Never have sex with them.

She knows what she wants and she’s in control at all times. Or at least she was until she came face to face with Fin Mackenize aka sex on a stick (okay, I made up the aka – but yeah!)

As Lux begins to break the rules that keep her grounded, she finds herself plunging into a pit of confusion and wanting to fall into Fin’s arms, but scared about what that could mean for her heart.

Lux keeps men at arms length. She’s had a troubling existence due to a less than happy childhood. When Fin walks into her life, her heart falls fast, but her head has other ideas. Inside the lines is a journey of learning how to love when you never thought you could.

I really loved Lux – a great, headstrong character with issues that she strives to overcome – even though it is challenging at times.

Fin – ahh, lovely. He’s sweet, sexy and comes out with some awesome one liners:

“Well, he wasna very specific with the details, but he did mention that ya needed a cock.”

That line had me howling with laughter, though I did find Fin’s accent threw me a little at times and I would’ve preferred if the author had just mentioned his strong accent rather than adding it to the dialogue.

There are, of course, some truly heartbreaking moments, moments when I wanted to shake Lux by the shoulders. Poor Fin!

“Ye broke me, Lux Trace. And it hurt.”

A teary eyed moment for sure.

There are some super steamy scenes, but all done tastefully and what I liked most about this book is that there is a fabulous plot.

I fail to find anything I dislike about this book. From the very start, it sucked me in and I didn’t want to put it down.

Hot! Oh my … shew this one was HOT! Sinfully Hot.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than by dressing up as a Twinkie and then going head to head in a push-up contest with a sexy SEAL? It wasn’t exactly how super shy Olivia Kane, aka The Body Babe, planned to spend her evening, but on a bet placed by her BFF, she had to give it a go. And since she’s known for being in top physical condition, she wasn’t all that worried that she might lose- except Lt. Commander Mitch Donovan appeared to be in excellent condition himself. A tie means they both win and when they pay up with a kiss and then a date, they realize there is a lot more between them than flexing their muscles.

Fav Quote:

“You don’t come near me if you’re doing that. You wanna have sex, I’m your man. You want to fight and argue, I’ll step right up. You need to get advice, to talk, to have someone killed, I can arrange that. But you cannot and will not cry on me.”

There was so much about this story I absolutely loved. The steamy scenes-and there were plenty of them-sizzled. Physically, Livi and Mitch ignited together. They flirted, had sex, laughed, had sex, ate, had sex, flirted some more, and well you see where this is going. Both characters were fun and enlightening despite the fact I had a hard time connecting with Livi’s character in the beginning. She’s supposed to be shy and out of her element, but I didn’t grasp this part of her personality and felt she was more of a go-getter than they story tried to portray. Overall, I liked her. I liked Mitch and I especially liked them together. But there is more to these two than sex. Both faced with decisions for the future, you see Livi and Mitch grow as they decide what’s important to them.

I’ve read several of Tawney Weber’s SEAL series and they never disappoint. They’re fun, fast-past reads with sexually charged characters that always leave you thinking- WOW!
